ADL History
2002 Champs: Will Reese, Josh Guile, and Nick Ruiz
MVP: Will R.
The first year was full of below the rim excitement, yelling, and two guys tumbling over concrete for a loose ball. Although hotdogs were several years away from the ADL equation, we did see our first pair of zubas in almost a decade. The First-Annual ADL Jammie-Jam went to Will Reese, Josh Guile, and Nick Ruiz. The MVP went to Will Reese. Play of the day: The Birdman sailed from the baseline for a Rec-Spec-Tacular dunk over two players, all on a twisted ankle.
2003 Champs: Jamey McGilbray, Joel Ecton, and Nick Jianas
MVP: Jamey M.
Brickfest: Nick Ruiz
Slammy-Jam: Jarrett Byars
With new team pairings, some exciting teams were formed. Alex Zimmerman and Honker teamed up to lose every game for the second consecutive year, but almost pulled out an upset in the first round of tournament play. But there was a new squad in town, comprised of Jamey McGilbray, Joel Ecton, and Nick Jianas that claimed the Second-Annual ADL title. The MVP went to Jamey McGilbray. There were two new events added: The Brickfest and the Slammy-Jam, which went to Nick Ruiz and Jarrett Byars, respectively. There was a lot of hacking, which led many to ponder: "Where's the ref?"
2004 Champs: John Macan, Andy Guile, and Anthony Ruiz
MVP: John M.
Brickfest: Jamey McGilbray
Slammy-Jam: Tim Crough
Well, some claimed foul indeed in 2004…..when it was announced that Green Bean would be the referee for the Third-Annual ADL Tournament. He received $20 and some Old Style for his work. Most would agree all that he received was some "old style" heckling from John Macan, with the exception of kicking his ball down the street. Anthony Ruiz "managed" his way to a title, along with Andy Guile, and John Macan, the newcomer. John was named the MVP, as well as the winner of the Brickfest. The Slammy-Jam went to Tim Crough, who flew through the air like a young Cheryl Swoops. Yet many felt hungry as the day went on. The tone was set indeed for the upcoming tournaments: Did someone say rationed hotdogs and potato chips?
2005 Champs: Chris Wing, Josh Guile**, and Tim Crough
MVP: Chris W.
Brickfest: John Macan
Slammy-Jam: David Westfall
In the Fourth-Annual ADL Jammy-Jam, there were some good times had by all. Anthony inhaled more smoke and soot than an 18th century chimney sweep. How about this quote, "Take it back!" Are you serious? That was about the only defense against this team. Chris Wing, Tim Crough, and Josh Guile teamed up to claim the title. Josh became the first ADL player to win two titles. Green Bean was not invited back, although many said that he should have been. The hacking was back, or was it just the "hack-a-Mac"? Did this perhaps prompt a return visit from the horses' striped cousin? Some teams competed hard, while others were too worried about rationing single cookies and potato chips between each game. Did anyone ask about the profits earned in 2005? Are there even supposed to be profits? Sounds like an investment plan to us! Put that money into a retirement fund. Who knows though, perhaps it was that mix of pop and pigs feet that led the team to the title, with Chris Wing as the MVP. The Brickfest went to John Macan, and the Slammy-Jam went to David Westfall. Moment of the tournament: Anthony forms a huddle before tip-off to explain his rules of consumption.
2006 Champs: Chris W., Loren, and Luke
MVP: Chris W., Loren, and Luke
Brickfest: Brett Olson
Slammy-Jam: Nick Jianis
The rains were coming down outside, and this team was raining the J inside. The tournament moved indoors for the first time, and was played on a 10 ft. goal. The Fifth Annual ADL Jammie Jam concluded with some fun-filled moments. Can anyone forget the Bean going down after sinking a 3 pt. shot from the baseline? Too much French toast it would seem. How about Jamey kicking a ball across the gym floor? Lots of hacking going on. Does the ref need to come back? Or Anthony packing up his 40 left over hamburgers and 30 hotdogs? Making up for his profits last year, he managed to overspend this year, sending his brother Nick into the red financially as well. The moment of the day might have been young Luke, with his mentor John looking on from the court, sinking the tournament clinching 3 pt. basket. With 8 teams competing, and players from Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, and Illinois, this tournament is on the rise. We thank those that traveled. Jamey from Colorado, much love for your efforts. He played great. Green from Illinois, the former trainer and ref, turned hoopster. Thanks for the barfing memories. And Christian from Omaha, the webmaster, the Haskell hoopster. He kept the communication flowing. We wish everyone well in their preparation for the 2006 ADL tournament.
